Cavapoos 101

Crossbred group

As the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has eclipsed the American Cocker Spaniel in popularity, it’s no real surprise that the Cavapoo has risen to be nearly as popular as the Cockapoo. As with the other Poodle-Spaniel crosses, the Cavapoo is an intelligent, playful and loving companion.

The Cavapoo may vary in size as well as coat texture and color. They are easier to keep neat if kept clipped short. As with other Poodle mixes, the Cavapoo may be more easily tolerated by people with allergies. While larger than many toy breeds, the Cavapoo is still small enough be portable, an excellent companion for any family adventure.

The appeal of the Cavapoo is no surprise, since it’s very similar to one of the oldest recognized and still popular crossbreds, the Cockapoo. The Cavapoo is smaller dog thanks to the Spaniel part coming from a toy breed, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. As with other Poodle crosses, the coat type, color and marking will vary, but the charm is consistent.

Cavapoo coat care and colors

The coats of Cavapoos vary in color, pattern and texture. Because they often need regular, professional grooming, it’s a good idea to start Cavapoos as puppies so they can learn to tolerate being bathed, dried and clipped short. Between spa sessions, combing is more important than brushing to get down to the skin and prevent matting. Acclimating puppies to having their feet handled and nails clipped or ground down is key to making future nail trims easier on everyone.

What is the best haircut for my Cavapoo?

That will depend on your personal preference, and your groomer may have suggestions for your individual Cavapoo. A teddy bear cut, with a rounded head and short fur over the body and legs, is a common style.

How often should I bathe my Cavapoo?

There’s no need to wait until your Cavapoo is filthy or stinky to bathe them. Healthy Cavapoos do well with 1 to 3 baths monthly, though may be bathed as often as weekly, or as little as a few times a year depending on the dog. Keeping your Cavapoo clipped short will make bathing easier, but if you do bathe your dog between grooming appointments, make sure any mats or tangles are combed or clipped out before you start.

How do I keep my Cavapoo’s coat shiny?

The key to keeping your Cavapoo's coat healthy and shiny can be found both on the inside and on the outside of a dog. Good health, good nutrition and veterinary-prescribed parasite control will show up as a healthy, shiny coat. Regular combing, brushing and baths as needed will keep a Cavapoo's healthy coat looking great.
