The Morkie is one of the few popular crossbreds created without the influence of the Poodle. This cross between a Maltese and a Yorkshire Terrier is a fun little dog with the sweet nature of the Maltese and the spunk of the Yorkie. Both breeds bring a silky coat to the mix, and most people keep these playful dogs kept clipped to prevent tangling.
Morkie coat care and colors
Both the Maltese and the Yorkshire Terrier have long, silky coats, so it’s no surprise the Morkie does, too. Because such coats tangle easily, even with daily combing and brushing, most Morkies are kept clipped short. While that makes home coat care easier, it does make for cold dogs on winter days, so it’s best to have a sweater on hand for warmth as needed. Additionally, acclimating puppies to having their feet handled will make a lifetime of nail trims easier.
How often should I bathe my Morkie?
There’s no need to wait until your Morkie is filthy or stinky to bathe them. Healthy Morkies do well with 1 to 3 baths monthly, though may be bathed as often as weekly, or as little as a few times a year depending on the dog. Make sure to comb or cut out any mats before bathing, since water makes mats even more difficult to remove.
How do I keep my Morkie’s hair from matting?
A cross between two breeds prized for long, silk hair, the Morkie needs daily brushing and to catch mats and tangles. Most Morkies are kept clipped short, making coat care easier on everyone.
How do you get rid or Morkie tear stains?
Tear stains have different causes, including blocked tear ducts, infections or allergies. Make sure the issue isn't related to these or any other health issues by asking your veterinary healthcare team for advice and treatment options. Once health problems have been ruled out, daily cleaning with a gentle soap and water solution and thorough drying can help, as can keeping hair on the muzzle clipped short. While there are products on the market to address tear stains, there is no consensus on how well any of them work.
