Pembroke Welsh Corgis 101
Herding groupThe Pembroke is the smaller of two breeds of Welsh Corgis -- the larger, less popular Cardigan is the other. Corgis are intelligent and courageous, as befitting a small dog developed to herd big livestock. Devoted to their families, they can be protective of them as well. Corgis are lively and entertaining, but they can be bossy if limits aren’t set and kept. They benefit from early socialization and manners training.
What we love about Pembroke Welsh Corgis
Fluffy Corgi butt social media is a thing
Pembroke Corgis are active dogs who don’t allow short legs to slow them down. They need regular exercise – and portion control --- to help with their tendency towards putting on weight. Keeping them fit is essential to help with the health risks posed by their long backs. Always on the alert, they also need early training to minimize barking.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi coat care and colors
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a downy undercoat and a short, stiff overcoat. Combing down to the skin and then brushing helps prevent the undercoat from matting and reduces shedding. A heavy seasonal shedder, the Corgi benefits from professional bathing and a “blowout” a couple of times a year to reduce flying fur. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi comes in four recognized solid colors, typically with white markings. Avoid wrestling matches at nail trimming time by acclimating puppies to having their feet handled.
What is a double coat?
We know to layer clothing in cold weather to keep us warmer. Dog breeds or mixes of breeds from colder parts of the world come with “layers” built in and called a double coat. Typically these coats combine a short, downy undercoat with an outer coat that helps to keep the insulating layer from getting wet. Double-coated dogs usually “blow coat” in the spring and again in the fall, with the undercoat shedding out for summer or for growing a new undercoat for winter. Double-coated dogs need to be combed and brushed down to the skin to prevent the undercoat from matting into a solid, felt-like mass that may have to be shaved off completely.
What is the best way to manage shedding in a Corgi's double coat?
The best way to manage your Pembroke Welsh Corgi's shedding is to be proactive about it: Brush and comb your Corgi down to the skin a couple of times a week, and use a shedding rake to pull out any loose fur. In the spring and fall, a warm bath can speed up seasonal shed. Many groomers use high-velocity pet dryers, but if you don't have one, you can towel-dry your pet (outside if it's warm) or use a hair dryer on the lowest heat setting to further get rid of loose fur.
Can I trim my Corgi's hair myself?
Your Pembroke Welsh Corgi doesn't need trimming, except perhaps between the pads of their paws. Brushing, combing, nail trims and bathing as needed will keep your Pembroke Welsh Corgi's coat looking great.
