Poodle Miniatures 101

Non-Sporting

Poodles have not only remained popular for decades, but they have also added the “oodles” to any number of popular crosses. Intelligent, good-natured and versatile, Poodles come in three sizes. The Miniature is the middle size, full of the Poodle’s joy of life in compact package that’s large enough for any adventure but not too small as to be fragile.

All the poodle smarts in a manageable size.

Easy to train and eager to please, Miniature Poodles love to show off – a holdover from their days as circus performers, perhaps? They’re also playful dogs with a sense of humor. Their coats are typically kept clipped short for ease of care, and they may be more easily tolerated by people with allergies. Good with other family pets and with children, the Miniature Poodle is an excellent family dog.

Most people think of an English Bulldog when they think of Winston Churchill, but the famous British Prime Minister was a fan of the Miniature Poodle. Legend has it when one of his dogs started to walk into an important meeting, the Prime Minister said, “No, Rufus. I haven’t found it necessary to ask you to join the wartime Cabinet.”

Poodle Miniature coat care and colors

The Poodle’s coat is noteworthy for what it doesn’t do: It doesn’t provoke severe sneezing or wheezing in some – but not all – allergy sufferers, and it doesn’t shed much. Those qualities have made the Poodle popular for crossbreeding, of course, but the three sizes of Poodle – Toy, Miniature, and Standard – remain consistently popular in their own right. The Poodle comes a dozen colors, both in solid and patches, the latter called “parti”, although only the solids take ribbons in the show ring.

If allowed to grow, the Poodle coat will "felt" into dozens of long cords, and before that, it will mat. Professional grooming is the norm for Poodles, who often get an easy-care short clip with shaved feet.

Do Poodles shed a lot?

All dogs shed, some a little and some a lot. Poodles shed minimally, almost not at all if kept clipped. The perception of how much a dog sheds typically related to how much fur ends up on clothing, furniture and carpets. For curly-coated or wire-coated dogs, for example, shed fur tends to stick in the coat until combed out. Short-haired and long-haired dogs shed a similar amount but longer fur tends to make a bigger impression.

How often should I groom my Poodle?

To keep your Miniature Poodle free of mats and tangles, schedule grooming every 6 to 8 weeks. Regular brushing and combing along with baths as needed will keep your Poodle looking great between grooming appointments.

How do I keep my Poodle’s hair fluffy and shiny?

The key to your Poodle having a shiny, healthy coat can be found both on the inside and on the outside of a dog. Good health, good nutrition and veterinary-prescribed parasite control will contribute to a healthy, shiny coat. Regular combing, brushing and bathing as needed will keep a Poodle's healthy coat looking great. A slicker brush will restore the fluff to areas not kept clipped short.
