While the Vizsla is mostly recognized for a sleek, coppery coat, the breed also comes in a wire-haired version. Although the two varieties are closely related, they are considered separate breeds. The Wirehaired was developed a century ago when Hungarian hunters brought in German Wirehaired Pointers to give the Vizsla a coat that would better stand up to harsher elements.

The Vizsla’s coat is easy to care for: Sleek and short, all it needs is weekly brushing and an occasional bath to keep it in good condition. It’s even easy to remember what recognized colors the breed comes in: A single solid, sleek and eye-catching copper. The Vizsla is a decent-sized dog, and that means decent-sized nails that need to be kept short. Avoid wrestling matches with adult dogs by acclimating puppies to having their feet handled and nails clipped. Some dogs better tolerate nail grinding rather than trimming, so experiment with which method works best.
Do Vizslas need haircuts?
The Vizsla’s smooth, short coat does not need trimming. Regular brushing and bathing as needed will help keep the coat looking great.
How often do I need to groom my Vizsla?
Vizslas don't need much in the way of grooming. Weekly brushing and bathing as needed will keep coats gleaming. Clip or grind nails weekly to prevent nails from becoming long daggers that are painful when cut. Finally, check ears and clean as needed with a veterinary-approved product.
How often should I bathe my Vizsla?
There’s no need to wait until your Vizsla is filthy or stinky to bathe them. Healthy Vizslas do well with 1 to 3 baths monthly, though may be bathed as often as weekly, or as little as a few times a year depending on the dog. You can extend the time between baths with regular brushing and combing.
