Aussie Minature or Toys 101
Herding groupDeveloped as smaller versions of the Australian Shepherd, the Mini and Toy Aussies are, like their larger relatives, smart and versatile companions. Like the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Jack Russell Terrier, they have a natural affinity towards horses and can often be found at equestrian events.
What we love about Aussie Minature or Toys
All the best of an Aussie in a smaller size
Intuitive, outgoing and eager to please, mini and toy Aussies are easy to train. Early socialization and manners training will pay off splendidly, providing a solid foundation for learning other skills. While the full-sized Australian Shepherd may be too active for some families, these smaller versions will probably do just fine with indoor play and regular long walks – although they’ll take all the exercise you offer them.

Toy or Miniature Australian Shepherds may be smaller in size, but they still possess the same intelligence and athleticism as their standard-sized counterparts. They are highly trainable and excel in various dog sports and activities.
Australian Shepherd Miniature or Toy coat care and colors
The Australian Shepherd has a long overcoat and a downy undercoat. Combing down to the skin helps prevent the undercoat from matting into a solid pelt that must be shaved off. A heavy seasonal shedder, the Aussie benefits from professional bathing and a “blowout” a couple of times a year to reduce flying fur. Red or blue merles are common.
Keeping nails short is important for this active working dog. Avoid wrestling matches in adult dogs by acclimating puppies to having their feet handled and nails attended to. Some dogs better tolerate nail grinding rather than trimming, so experiment with which method works best.
Do Australian Shepherds shed a lot?
All dogs shed, some a little and some a lot. The perception of how much a dog sheds typically related to how much fur ends up on clothing, furniture and carpets. Australian Shepherds shed a fair amount, thanks to their double coats. Double-coated dogs are the biggest shedders, losing fur from both the downy undercoat and the protective overcoat.
What is a double coat?
We know to layer clothing in cold weather to keep us warmer. Breeds or mixes of breeds from colder parts of the world come with “layers” built-in called a double coat. Typically these coats combine a short, downy undercoat with an outer coat that helps to keep the insulating layer from getting wet. Double-coated dogs usually “blow coat” in the spring and again in the fall, with the undercoat shedding out for summer or for growing a new undercoat for winter. Double-coated dogs need to be combed and brushed down to the skin to prevent the undercoat from matting into a solid, felt-like mass that may have to be shaved off completely.
What is the best way to manage shedding in an Australian Shepherd's double coat?
The best way to manage your Australian Shepherd's shedding is to be proactive about it: Brush and comb your Aussie down to the skin a couple of times a week, and use a shedding rake to pull out any loose fur. In spring and fall, a warm bath can speed up the seasonal shed. Always remember to remove any mats before bathing. Many groomers use high-velocity pet dryers, but if you don't have one, you can towel-dry your pet (outside if it's warm) or use a hair dryer on the lowest heat setting to further get rid of loose fur. If the job is too daunting, make an appointment with a groomer.
